Arkansas History documentary shoot on Petit Jean

posted by Unknown on 26 Jun 2009 | filed under Programs | permalink

Hello everyone! This is my first blog post and I'm pretty excited to be sharing my experiences as I go about producing our Arkansas history documentary. This project has been in the works for several years but finally got rolling in early 2009. The goal is to produce a piece on the history of the state that will inspire people to explore deeper into the stories and people that built this state. Luckily for the viewers and myself, Arkansas has a lot of resources associated with its history. So far I've made use of the encyclopedia of Arkansas (www.encyclopediaofarkansas.com), the Historic Arkansas Museum, the Arkansas Studies Institute, the Arkansas Archeological Survey, the Department of Parks and Tourism and the Department of Arkansas Heritage. That's not including all of the individuals who have helped me already in this process. So if anyone is interested in learning about Arkansas, you have plenty of resources to explore!

Wednesday we did our re-enactment of pre-contact Native Americans. Putting this one together was a huge task since I needed to find a Native American woman and costume her so that she appeared authentic to the time we were attempting to recreate. My first break came when I found Sunnie Butcher-Keller to be my re-enactor. I had contacted a number of people in my search and just wasn't having any luck. I started to think I would have to find a Hispanic woman to play the part, but then my office mate, Chuck Dovish mentioned Sunnie. I spoke to Sunnie on the phone and she was game for it, but it wasn't until I saw her in person that I realized how perfectly she fit the part. I can't remember the exact break-down, but I think she if half Apache. The costume was another hurdle to overcome. I thought I could find something in Arkansas through one of the universities or theatre companies, but I was wrong. After dozens of phone calls between myself and my intern, John Richter, we found nothing. Then I started looking in Los Angeles. I tried the costume departments at both Warner Bros. and Sony but neither of them could help either. Finally we decided to make it ourselves. Luckily AETN has a woman on staff, Sara Willis, who is a skilled seamstress. In addition to her remarkable work in the Development department, Sara recently made costumes for an opera based on The Scarlet Letter that was staged at Reynolds Performance Hall. She knows her stuff! And she made me an amazing costume. Kathryn Harrington who just moved to Arkansas and is a professional make-up and face painting artist did the tattoos and the red stripe in Sunnie’s hair. Kathryn was great and you can check out her face painting skills at www.livingworksofart.com.

So Wednesday was a big day. It was hot and we had a lot to do in a brief amount of time, but it turned out great! I would love to show you some stills, but I want you to be a little surprised when the documentary comes out, so I’ll just include some behind the scenes stills shot by Rowena Parr who also works in the Production department here at AETN.

I was blessed to spend most of my childhood in the Smyrna community near Okolona, Arkansas.Ispent many Sundays sitting on those pews from the 1800's at the Smyrna Methodist Church. Grandma oliie Spradlon was such a big part of all the family. All we grandchildren realized as we grew up and started our own families just how special our Granny was. She instilled in us such strong Christian ethics that we didn't realize was so importanat when we were so young. We still to this day spend anytime we are all together talking and laughing about our childhood at Grandma's house. One of the really funny memories is about the day we were caught playing at Smyrna Church. We were "playing church". we ran out the back door and hid. When the guy found us one of the cousins told him that church belonged to Grandma and we could play up there. We found out about Grandma walking to the church on ice one Sunday. When the Bro. Freeman asked her how she got there she told him she used her pithfork to stick in the ground and pull herself up to all the way to the church. She wanted to light the fire at the church in case anyone came that cold icy morning. She and Bro. Freeman had a 2 person service that morning. Grandma was probably in her 80's when she did this. The stories could go on and on about Grandma Ollie and Smyrna Church. Anyone with memories of Smyrna Church please contact me. PRay290399@aol.com Pat Ray

As a former officer in Arkansas Certified Organic, Inc., I am fully committed to organic sustainable farming. I am thrilled this program can be seen on AETN. The Foodshed Farm's Basket-a-Month program is very interesting to me. I applaud AETN for familiarizing Arkansans with the knowlege and possibilities of organic production as well as support for our organic farmers statewide.

Dear Phyllis,AETN and readers, I just wanted to you to know that cooking in a zip loc bag is very toxic because of the dioxins released when the plastic is heated. I am attaching an e-mail I received and you can research the dangers yourself on the web. There is a lot of information out there. Sincerely, Pam Evans, Northwest AR Cancer Update from John Hopkins This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Centeras well. No plastic containers in microwave. No water bottles in freezer. No plastic wrap in microwave.A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.. Recently, Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital ,was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they ar e for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers....This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releasesdioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body... Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food... You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Cornin g Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons... Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave.. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead. This is an article that should be sent To anyone important in your life! Bottled water in your car is very dangerous. This is how Sheryl Crow got breast cancer. She was on the Ellen show and said this same exact thing. This has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels in breast cancer, especially in Australia. A friend whose mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and the Doctor told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The doctor said that the heat and the plastic of the bottle have certain chemicals that can lead to breast cancer. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car, and, pass this on to all the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know and be aware and just might save us! The heat causes toxins from the plastic to leak into the water and they have found these toxins in breast tissue. Use a stainless steel Canteen or a glass bottle when you can! LET EVERYONE WHO HAS A WIFE / GIRLFRIEND / DAUGHTER KNOW PLEASE.

The Tharp family is getting smaller, but we still have a family reunion Memorial day weekend. We always have a couple of good meals. I use your recipes and I do tell my family where I get them. They all think I lie about it and assume I am a good cook. I am the worst at cooking or baking yet. Thank you for your program and the recipes.

From the ZipLock site FAQ's. No Dioxin in Ziplocks 2. I have read an email that warned consumers about the alleged dangers of using Ziploc® products in the microwave. Is this information true? In 2002, we became aware of an email that was being widely circulated, which warned consumers about the alleged dangers of using plastics in the microwave. This email claimed that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body, thereby increasing the risk of producing cancerous cells. We researched these claims and it is clear that the information is misleading, and unnecessarily alarms consumers. Saran™ and Ziploc® products are 100% dioxin free. You also should be aware that dioxins can be formed only when chlorine is combined with extremely high temperatures, such as 1,500°F, which even the most powerful consumer microwave ovens are unable to produce. Our Saran™ and Ziploc® products can be used with confidence when label directions are followed. All Saran™ Wraps, Ziploc® Containers and microwaveable Ziploc® Brand bags meet the safety requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for temperatures associated with defrosting and reheating food in microwave ovens, as well as room, refrigerator, and freezer temperatures. Like all Ziploc® Brand products, Zip 'n Steam™ bags are dioxin free. Additionally, they are specially designed for microwave use and meet the safety requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for temperatures associated with cooking food in the microwave when label directions are followed. Please help us alleviate consumers' concerns and share these facts with those who forwarded this misleading e-mail to you, and to whom you may have sent it. Thank you for giving us a chance to set the record straight.

I loved the show that recently aired (though the sound went out in the middle for a bit). I'm disappointed that there are no pictures on the website. I wanted to look at them and visit the sites. One in particular was the re-dedication of one. I cannot remember where it was located and the information of the bridges that were aired in the program is really not available. Help? Thanks!

My family are residence of Helena-West Helena. I watched the program late one night and was able to have a better insight of the struggles of my mothers parents, and how we were able to stratch up from nothing to something. My wife and I go there often to visit our family and friends, now I will have a greater appreciation for the streets my grandfather walked up on everyday till his passing. I really truly enjoyed the program.

I learned this in the Scouting program, but added another dimension. I put a bunt pan at the base of the stick to catch the drippings for gravy. I also put foil covered corn on the cob, and sweet potatoes under the can after I have removed the turkey.Takes about 20 min to 1/2 hr.to cook.I love cooking Thanksgiving like this opposed to messing up the kitchen....!!

This is an incredible piece of work. Thank you using your talent to give voice to our fellow Pacific Islanders. This video documents valuable information for both an "outsider" as well as an "insider." I am currently working on a 90-second PSA for a class. I snitched a few clips from here to support my message on "nuclear bomb tests in the Pacific is to the uprooting and displacement of Pacific Islanders as Global Warming is to the destruction of our planet home. I'll be glad to share the final piece with you. Komol tata?! Once again, you are very much appreciated!

They are all impressive & spectacular structures, worth of preservation. They are so closely tied to the history of the communities of this state. And riding a camel for real. Hope my buddies don't think I've lost my cool, but this zoo is a place I'll be going back to soon and hope some of my friends will go with us. It's unreal like out of a movie, but it's real!

I think this is very informative story about another group that has become victims of what is considered progress by some. Why do people who are supposed to be civilized feel like they should impose their will on those who are least able to defend themselves and homelands?
Comment made by Leslie Harshaw on 02 Aug 2009 ****.
I was in awe of the outside of the Lakeport home and like a starving child, could not wait until the doors were opened and the "feast" to begin. My disappointment at the emptiness was felt clear to my stomach. I felt as if I was looking at a home for sale and not a page of history. The workmanship was incredible, but again, there was no warmth to the house at all. I was ... it was... honestly? blah...

Sometimes the proposals are called health care reform and our president usually calls it health insurance reform. Which is it? Are there any reforms to health care?
Comment made by Myra Brewer on 20 Aug 2009
Good interview. Question were a little of the softball variety. The answers were as expected. Typical Democrat talking points with no explanation at all on how it will be paid for. No mention of tax increases which will be necessary.
Comment made by Larry Hicks on 20 Aug 2009 ***..
Ross held the health care bill hostage until rural Medicare reimbursement rates were increased, which increased costs. Ross also demanded a public plan to no longer be tied to Medicare rates, which increased costs. Mike Ross supported the 12 year monopoly on biologic drugs for pharmaceuticals, which increased costs.

The only thing Mike Ross did in the way of "cost containment" was to demand that less money be spent. Which means that pharmaceutical companies and hospitals and doctors and device makers get more money, but fewer people will be covered and insurance payments for middle class people will be higher.

Twenty percent of his district lives in poverty, 21.8% have no insurance, and 25% are African American. Instead of telling progressives that they should suck it up and accept a bad health care bill because it's "politically imperative,"

what is peach schnapps?
Comment made by alma marvel on 15 Sep 2009
American Schnapps are alcoholic beverages that are produced by mixing neutral grain spirit with fruit flavors or with other flavors. This mixture is then bottled with added sugar and (usually) glycerine, producing a smooth, syrup-like drink. Their alcohol content can be anywhere between 15% and 50% ABV (30–100 proof). American schnapps can be bought in a very wide variety of flavors, including aniseed, apricot, banana, blackberry, black currant (aka crème de cassis), butterscotch, cherry, cinnamon, coffee, lemon, menthol mint, peach, peppermint, root beer, and sour apple. These drinks technically fall into the category of liqueurs because of their added sugar content. ~ courtesy of Wikipedia

TO: Mr. Steve Barnes, Arkansas Week in Review I am a big fan and have been for decades. My comments are about the Dec. 7 show. The "pile on" Huckmister segment was repulsive. I hope you will review the expressions on faces, most especially Doug Thompsos's. I don't know why you have Doug on the program anyway, he is about as dense as a rock. This thing with Clemmons will not slow the Huck a bit even though Doug and Sanders (to some extent) desire otherwise. I don't expect a reply. Thanks, Ron Harrell

Wonderful! I grew up in nearby Boone County and spent a lot of time in the Erbie area as a youngster. Isn't it interesting that the three he names are the three hard-core professional politicians in the fight. SHAME ON DOUG THOMPSON! I dropped my subscription to the newspaper on Sept. 14th last year because they buried the hundreds of thousands marching on Washington on Sept 12th on page 12 of the paper, while putting an Obama health care speech (his 12th such speech in 3 months) in Chicago on page 1 that same day. I will not support propaganda and the suppression of the voice of Americans. And now once again we witness the propaganda and absurdity of eliminating from discussion the #1 candidate right now for Congress - Bernie Skoch. It's time you all resign your jobs for your complicit behavior with the big money agendas of the powers that be. When are you going to step up and prove yourselves to be a trusted independent voice? A 4th check on the power structure of America? I fear we are lost as a nation, and it begins with local corruption as you have witnessed right here with Doug Thompson - who is obviously in the bag for Womak based on these comments. Doug Thompson: Bought and paid for by the RNC - not the people of Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley.
